Semester System 2008 – 2009

With a view to bringing in educational reforms and making the system of learning and assessment more meaningful and just, The Higher Education, Government of Madhya Pradesh and the Barkatullah University, Bhopal, have introduced Semester System for all First Year classes of Under Graduate and Post Graduate programs from the academic year 2008 – 2009.

The new system attempts to bring about the all round development of students where teachers must adopt a more holistic approach by giving students wide exposure and helping them to build up confidence, communicative abilities and a deeper understanding of the world around them.

Two Semesters
As part of this new system there will be two semesters in an academic year:
Semester I – July to December
Semester II – January to June

Focus
This new method of learning focuses on increasing the general knowledge and awareness of students along with emphasizing social, scientific and community development. The overall objective is to bring about the all round growth and development of students.

Attendance
All students must have a minimum of 75% attendance. Each registered student is required to sign for his / her attendance and a monthly record of this is sent to Higher Education. The Department of Higher Education is appraised of students below 50% attendance.

Assessment & Marking Scheme
The assessment and evaluation of students in the new system is as follows:

  • 70% - on theory which will be tested through an end of the semester University Exam

  • 30% - on internal assessment which will be practical in nature

Students will be required to take an active part in projects, presentations, seminars, workshops, quizzes, debates, discussions etc as their internal assessment will be based on their performance in these activities.

The internal assessment is done for each subject and paper through a scheme called Continuous Comprehensive Evaluation or CCE which is done in 2 phases called CCE 1 & CCE 2.

For the first Semester the CCE 1 is done in the second half of August whereas the CCE 2 is done in the second half of September.

Students who fail to appear for the CCE stand to lose out on 30% marks straightaway. Besides, those students who fail to appear in both CCEs will not be allowed to appear for the end of the semester final examination.

Projects
Another essential component of the Semester curriculum is Project work which is compulsory for all students. Students are required to undertake one project in each semester. The Project carries 50 marks – 25 on the project, 15 for a presentation on the project and 10 for viva voce based on the project and presentation. All students are allotted a guide for their project and must ensure that it is completed A student must get a minimum of 33% marks to pass in the project. If a project is found to be copied, the student may be a given a zero for it.

All parents are advised to ensure that their wards

  • Attend regular classes and have a minimum of 75% attendance.

  •  Take the CCE 1 & 2 which carry 30% marks for each subject.

  • Do the Project and submit it in time.

Students must understand the seriousness of these three important components of the Semester system namely;

  • Attendance

  • CCE 1 & 2

Project
We wish the students of Semester I a very gainful and satisfying learning experience. The college will be posting all important and relevant information about the Semester System including attendance and CCE Performance of students on the college website from time to time.
