College Profile
The Bhopal School of Social Sciences was founded in the year 1972, at the initiative of Most Rev. Dr. Eugene D'Souza, the then Archbishop of Bhopal and founder Chairman of the college, in response to the felt need of the time, for a broad based, job oriented curriculum with the initial focus on social service and entrepreneurship. The institution is supported and managed by the Archbishop of Bhopal through the BSSS Foundation Society chaired by the Archbishop of Bhopal.

The broad aim is the 'diffusion of the right ideas of work and human relationships, with a view to assisting the national efforts to promote an egalitarian society'. Within the fairly traditional setting  of an Indian University, in which old patterns and structures die hard, the college evolved as a novel institute reforming methods of teaching and examination, encouraging student involvement in decision making, organisation and implementation.

From its inception, the college has adopted an integrated approach to learning to achieve academic excellence and quality education. This vision has been the cornerstone of our growth in the last 45 years; as we adopted new programs, initiated innovative learner strategies and tools and took bold steps to go beyond the prescribed curriculum with a view to transform knowledge into affirmative action.

Initially known for its Social Sciences and Management courses, it grew and diversified to meet the changing needs of time and education, with the introduction of courses in Commerce, Information Technology, Teacher Education and Physical Education. The Undergraduate programmes were further developed with the addition of Post Graduate courses in Social Work, English Literature, Commerce, Economics, Computer Applications, Sociology, Business Administration and Physical Education. In keeping with its sensitivity to global needs, the college runs an International MBA, as well as an MBA in Travel and Tourism, in collaboration with Assumption University, Bangkok.

In sync with the high demand for Commerce subjects, the college offers a wide range of options including, an Honours Course and specialisations in Foreign Trade, Travel and Tourism, Banking and Insurance, Taxation, Computer Applications etc. Its Humanities portfolio includes three Undergraduate Honours Programs in Social Work, Economics and English Literature.

On acquiring an Autonomous status in 2013, the college strengthened its emphasis on the development of employability skills, with the introduction of Certificate courses. Presently we offer 48 Certificate courses in wide ranging skills and subjects, designed by experts, indigenously designed, developed and offered by the BSSS Alumni. Two of these are UGC courses in Multimedia & Animation and Child Guidance & Counselling, whereas two are international Certificate courses - the Business English Certificate Course of University of Cambridge at three levels, and the BBC English Edge programme offered through the English Language Lab. All of these courses are inter-disciplinary, and help us to focus on skills training, thus adding further value to the degree courses. The Alumni involved have extensive international experience and help bring in the global perspective.

In the last six years the college has considerably expanded the range of courses and grown from student strength of 3154 in 2011-12 to almost 4000 students in the academic year 2017-18. In response to suggestions made by the NAAC team, as well as the direction given by its Governing Body, the college plans to introduce Science courses at the UG level from the academic year 2017-18. Further expansion in Commerce and Humanities courses is also on the anvil.

As part of its objective of encouraging critical thinking and imaginative expansion of acquired knowledge, the college encourages student and faculty research. In-house funding of individual and group projects is done through its well-established Research Cell. In the year 2016-17 the college registered 25 International publications and 33 National Publications. 29 teachers participated in International Conferences and 66 in National, from a total teacher strength of 92. In-house publications include 1 college magazine, 2 newsletters - Campus Pulse, 2 departmental newsletters, 4 departmental journals and 1 departmental e-journal.

The practised process of learning emphasises the need for academic excellence by drawing forth the intelligence, initiation and problem solving abilities of the students. Ongoing assessment and evaluation ensure complete preparedness and academic discipline. Active participation in co curricular and extracurricular activities is emphasised to instil confidence and encourage leadership, decision making and organisational ability.

The college has an active Placement Cell with national and international companies, spanning sectors like IT, Management, FMCG, E-commerce, Banking, Insurance, Outsourcing visiting the campus for recruitments.

Once of our distinctive features is a pro-active Social Outreach Enabling Unit (SOEU) which coordinates the outreach activities of the college and various departments. Students from across the departments volunteer in large numbers to engage with neighbouring communities ensuring social benefits to the marginalised in areas like awareness, education, health and sanitation, living conditions etc. The college several local, national and some international projects in social welfare and community service.

To ensure quality in education and administration, the college collects regular  feedback from all relevant stakeholders and on most activities and programmes. All collected feedback is analysed and appropriate corrective action taken.

BSSS has evolved into one of the premier educational institutes of Madhya Pradesh shaping the educational landscape of the state. All through the process of its growth and development, the college never lost sight of the vision of its forefathers and continued to be guided by the spirit of the ideology with which the institute was established - building a student community which is able to take bold initiatives, capable of purposeful and critical thinking, sensitive to the socio-economic needs of our country.

The strength of our living ideology was put to the litmus test in 2006 and subsequently in 2012 and 2017 by NAAC. on all three occasions, our claim to excellence was validated through an 'A' Grade certificate. In 2017 we registered a CGPA of 3.27 and now rank first in Bhopal and second in Madhya Pradesh on the NAAC accreditation scale. The college acquired an Autonomous status in May 2013. To validate our existing quality of teaching and administration, and environmental consciousness the college acquired ISO 9001:2008 & ISO 14001:2004 in February 2016.
